Incorporating weights/ strength training into your exercise programme can be extremely beneficial. Weight/strength training makes you stronger without “bulking you up”. It also improves fat loss; when you’ve finished your workout your body will carry on burning calories into the day/evening (that’s a no brainier). Weight/strength training defines your body and the way you look.
It’s a myth that muscle weighs more than fat – it weighs the same but muscle takes up less space than fat and it’s leaner.
Weight/strength training can prevent injury by strengthening important muscles. It can also help to enhance your mood, making you feel better in yourself, reduce stress and improve your confidence. Weight/strength training, as well as strengthening muscles, strengthens bones which is very important as we get older, and especially for us ladies.
Weight training does need a little guidance to ensure the correct technique is used, but it really doesn’t have to be daunting and there’s absolutely no need to be joining the big weights section in the gym to weight/strength train. It can be done with little or no equipment.
